Mindful Moment

Shinrin-yoku the practice of “forest bathing.” “Forest bathing” may seem like a strange term but the practice of it isn’t so literal. “Forest bathing” or Shinrin-yoku, is a Japanese term for the relaxation method of being in a forest or other natural space, and soaking in the surroundings by sensory input in order to calm the mind and connect with nature. In a day and age where we’re surrounded by screens, it helps to take a break from the stress of everyday life and to live in the moment surrounded by the natural world. Dr. Quing Li, the founder of the Japanese Society for Forest Medicine, states that benefits of forest bathing include reduced blood pressure, reduced stress hormones, and improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

So, how does somebody participate in forest bathing?

While there are various resources and even guided forest bathing experiences, it is easy enough to forest bathe alone. First, setting aside time to go forest bathing is crucial. 2 hours is generally recommended but this can be adapted. Leaving behind or silencing any technology is crucial to forest bathing in order to remain in the present and soak in the surroundings. The location does not have to be a forest specifically, but any type of natural space with minimal man made structures. Once you arrive at the space, take in all of the surroundings. Be aware of your body in space and utilize your five senses. And with that, you can either mindfully walk or sit and meditate. Mindfulness is a well used therapeutic intervention and knowing new ways to practice are always exciting! Make some time to try forest bathing this spring!

A Look into: The Positive Impact of Sunlight

For many, the winter months mean less exposure to sunlight, changes to activity levels, and more time spent indoors or at home. Spring time provides the opportunity to reconnect with habits and activities that take place outdoors and within the reach of the sun’s rays. There are many benefits of regular sunlight exposure including:

1. Improved mood – Sunlight encourages the production of the hormone serotonin in the brain, which helps boost mood. Serotonin is a hormone involved in regulating our emotions.

2. Positive impact on sleep – Regular exposure to sunlight can help the body regulate the circadian rhythm and production of melatonin, a hormone directly related to sleep.

3. Increased Vitamin D – Vitamin D is important for many bodily functions, including reducing inflammation and strengthening bones.

Current research supports the notion that even 10-15 minutes of sunlight a few times a week can have a positive impact on physical and mental health! Please remember to protect your skin and apply an SPF appropriate to your individual needs. Consider taking some time to brainstorm – how can you incorporate more sunlight into your days? Some ideas might include taking a short walk on a lunch break, reading or working on homework outdoors, exploring local trails or parks, or even spending a few minutes on the porch. Big or small, we encourage you to pick a few ideas to incorporate this spring!
