A Look into: Physical Activity

It’s no secret that physical activity boosts mood, but did you know that attending and watching a live sporting events increases feelings of well being? A new study conducted of over 7200 people found that study subjects reported increased life satisfaction, a greater sense of life being worthwhile, and reduced loneliness. Those are some serious mental health benefits – and they held true for professional and amateur events alike. Watching people perform incredible feats of personal and collective excellence before your very eyes just drives home how incredible the human body is. Rooting in a crowd collectively gets your blood pumping, and silly chants will have you laughing while riding that will-they-wont-they emotional rollercoaster in the best way possible. The feeling of being apart of something, a part of a community all rooting for the same thing, is undeniably beneficial.
“Watching live sports of all types provides many opportunities for social interaction and this helps forge group identity and belonging, which in turn mitigates loneliness and boosts levels of well-being,” lead author Helen Keyes, PhD, head of the school of psychology and sport science at Anglia Ruskin University, said in a press release. Summer is a great time to head out and support your local team! They’ll appreciate the support, and you’ll be reaping in the mental health benefits!
